EXCLUSIVE: WESLEY CLARK TO PUBLISH BOOK; "LIKELY" ENTER 2008 PREZ RACE
BY MICHAEL A. HARRIS STAFF WRITER The field of Democratic candidates running for the presidency in 2008 is likely to get larger, as Retired General Wesley Clark is expected to enter the race, according to an aide close to the General.... Last week, Luther Lowe, who is helping to ghostwrite Clark's memoirs,
speaking exclusively with this reporter, said that the former NATO Supreme
Allied Commander will likely file the paperwork to form a presidential exploratory
committee within the next three months. "Wesley Clark is the only candidate with the military and foreign policy experience necessary to serve as President during these volatile times," said Lowe. "He feels a moral obligation that for good of the Democratic Party and the country that there be a candidate with his background and I think that it would be fair to say that within the next few months you'll see an official campaign announcement." Clark has already been going through the motions of a presidential bid, visiting states such as New Hampshire and Iowa and meeting with Party leaders. His book is scheduled for release in September of this year, just about the time that the campaign season should be shifting into full gear. Releasing a book is a common way to "test the waters" and gain publicity as part of a campaign. Two of his would-be opponents, former North Carolina Senator John Edwards and Illinois Senator Barack Obama just released their own books. Of all of the Democratic candidates, Clark by far has the most foreign policy experience and is the only one to have ever served in uniform. Clark ran an unsuccessful campaign for the Democratic Party's nomination for the presidency in 2004 and like Edwards he appears now to want to give it another try in 2008. |
