Illegal Aliens, Not Immigrants

Dear Editor,

Contemporary politics has become an overly focused debate on how to handle the Iraq War. Issues ranging from when to pullout to how to create peace in the unstable new democracy are constantly discussed and debated while ignoring important domestic problems. The most pressing domestic issue is the overwhelming flow of illegal aliens in our country. Illegal aliens have created several serious problems for Americans, and we must act expeditiously in order to solve this problem before it is too late.

Firstly, illegal aliens are being exploiting by greedy business owners. They receive unreasonably low wages, and the business owners do not have to pay minimum wage, which saves them money. This is an abuse of power by business owners, and this is unfair to these low-skilled illegal aliens. Low-skilled Americans, who comprise the middle class, suffer economically as a result. Illegal aliens are taking jobs requiring physical labor, and the interests of Americans who want the same jobs are simply being ignored. Middle-class Americans must come first when it comes to employment, not illegal aliens. Cheap illegal foreign labor should not be an option for employers.

Our resources will not be able to adapt to the increased demand of government services by illegal aliens and their children. Our hospitals, which treat anyone who enters the hospital through an emergency room, and schools, which accept any students regardless of parentage or illegal alien status, are simply unable to meet the needs of the growing population of illegal aliens and their offspring.

According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, over 30 percent of prisoners are illegal aliens; illegal drug smuggling through the Mexican border is a serious problem that resulted because of an ambiguous position on this crisis by our federal government. American taxpayers are being taxed for the needs of non-Americans, and nothing hurts the middle-class more than this. Illegal aliens are a detriment to the prosperity of the American economy and hurt the American middle class.

Culturally speaking, illegal aliens do not want to become part of American society. This is evident by visiting Miami, Southern Texas, or Southern California. Americans should not have to worry about traveling in parts of the country where English is not spoken and they are not welcomed because they are English-speaking American citizens. These are not the immigrants who came here through Ellis Island with a desire to become American and establish their lives here. Illegal aliens feel no obligation to become part of the United States, and their objective is to earn money while taxpayers provide all of the services available in our country.

The solution is simple: deport illegal aliens, enforce a border, punish greedy business owners who employ undocumented workers, and reform our failing immigration system. Low-skilled jobs must be returned to middle-class American citizens. The border must be enforced to stop illegal drug smuggling. Illegal aliens with criminal records must be sent back immediately. American resources should be reserved for tax-paying American citizens. Illegal aliens negatively affect the American economy and our society. We must act while there is still time.

Sincerely,

Julian Reder
