Magner Center Offers Job Opportunities to the BC Community
By Stephney Williams Staff Writer
The Brooklyn College Magner Center offers services for students and alumni to help them find prospective jobs.
Located in 1309 James Hall, the center serves an average of 30 to 35 students each day, helping them to plan their careers, and hosts about 100 workshops per semester and approximately 2,500 students attend. Center staff respond to about 50-75 student emails with questions concerning job advice and interview preparation each week. Through e-recruiting, a tool that is part of the Center's website students can search for internships, jobs and register for workshops.
"I love my job, it is extremely rewarding since I know, even in a small way I'm changing their lives," said Natalie Guarin-Klein, a counselor at the Center. "It is the best feeling when a student tells they got the job they wanted, it makes my day." Guarin-Klein's responsibilities include professional development , career education, and skill-building workshops. She also review resumes, assists with cover letters, and personal statements.
The Center extends a hand to students from all different backgrounds, including foreign students and even those with language barriers. They provide students and alumni with live career chats, internships, career counseling and assessments, alumni mentoring, resume enhancement, job search strategies, full and part -time jobs, and pre- law career counseling.
They will hold various workshops during March, which according to the Center could be useful for students interested in any career field. Some of the workshops include Microsoft Excel training, resume writing, how to find the right major, practice interviews and improving networking skills.
The Center will help put together three jobs fairs this semester. The first one will be the Brooklyn - Staten Island Collegiate Job Fair on March 14th at the College of Staten Island, which is anticipated to feature more than 100 employers. The second fair we will be held on March 22 from 12:30 p.m. to in the Brooklyn College Student Center.. Employers will be seeking candidates for full – time jobs, internships and those looking for summer employment. The event is open to undergraduate students in all majors as well as graduate students and recent alumni.
The third fair this semester will be held on April 27 at the Javits Convention Center in Manhattan.
